Vagina | on the beach

Vagina, Cathedral or Religion was the surprising highlight of the art route organised by the Koksijde Culture Council in the summer of 2010.
Later this work was moved to Watou, where it was part of "Contrast".

The vagina is six metres high, four metres wide and twelve metres 'deep'. You can just walk through it. That is indeed the intention. I want to show the vagina on the inside to experience its beauty. And to grow the awareness that from there new life is created', says Frans De Medts, alias Francesco Fransera.

De Medts calls his work Vagina, Cathedral or Religion. Those who walk through it will get the impression that they are in a cathedral. This enlarged vagina is for me a cathedral of meaning. Almost all religions have developed a philosophy of sexuality. This work is intended to encourage the viewer to meditate and reflect. Of course I also respond to the international problem of sexual abuse. I would like to stress that there is still too little honesty about sexuality. If people were to talk more about this subject, there would be fewer tragedies than there are at present in the church. At the same time, this vagina symbolizes the beauty and livability of nature religions, but I also denounce the inhumane phenomenon of circumcision.
